Cardiff-by-the-Sea
Branch Library Encinitas,
California
This
6,000 square foot Library will be the County's first new "Green"
construction project to be exclusively sustainable building
materials and exceed Title 24 energy requirements.
The copper-faced standing seam steel roof form of the building
is curvilinear and organic. The building's facades are
highly articulated to reduce the scale of the building and
provide shading where required by its orientation. The library
opens up dramatically to the north with a large glass curtain
wall to collect a maximum of natural light. The concrete panels
are treated with exposed aggregates and seashells to reflect
the local beach environment, while the roof color will age
into a green copper patina. Steel trellises with bougainvillea
over each entry and lush tropical landscaping will soften
the transition from the exterior to the interior.
Services
provided included initial budget preparation, architect and
contractor selection, design and construction management and
furnishings acquisition.
